National School Grounds Week can be a great opportunity to promote your school in the local media and raise your profile in your community. Why not involve the local community and perhaps invite your local MP to share in your NSGW celebrations? Or contact your local newspaper or radio station and ask them to come along and see some of the activities in action?

Promoting your school through NSGW

To help promote the activities taking place at your school we suggest:

  • encouraging pupils to write to the local MP - we find they often respond more positively to invitations from children. To find details of your local constituency MP visit www.locata.co.uk/commons/ ;
  • inviting parents and/or other members of the local community to participate in your NSGW events;
  • contacting the local media to tell them when you will be doing the activities.
To increase your chances of local media coverage you may wish to:

  • send out a press release a few days before the event so journalists can see when, where and why the event is taking place - use this template to help you;
  • phone the relevant newspaper/radio station to make sure they received your press release. This gives you the opportunity to draw attention to the most important points and to answer any further questions they may have - is there a local celebratory/dignatory attending? Can they photograph the children taking part? Are there any unusual activities taking place? Will they be able to speak to the children?
  • call again the day before the event to prompt them - they often decide at the last minute depending on what else they have to cover.
