Working outside in the early years

Outdoor play is not just about physical development, it deserves equal weighting to indoor play in terms of providing planned experiences for young children.  Outdoors offers a wonderfully rich, multi-sensory environment that is meaningful and stimulating for all young children, from birth to five.

The value of outdoor play

In fulfilling many aspects of the UK’s early years curriculums, outdoor play is an even more appropriate vehicle, providing children with ‘real’ experiences that help embed their early learning.

Young children are experiential learners, and are entitled to learn in the way that best suits them. For most children, outdoors is exciting, engaging and fun and they are therefore keen to be outdoors and ready to learn from the ‘real’ play experiences they have outdoors.

Outdoors offers young children essential experiences vital to their well-being, health and development in all areas. Children who miss these are significantly deprived.

Outdoors is where children would rather be. Learning taking place indoors can be supported and extended by applying it to ‘real’ situations outdoors.
