Since 2004 LTL has worked with 55 primary schools across Wales to deliver the RBS-funded Supergrounds programme. This represents an investment of £91,000 into learning and play provision in Wales. In addition to cash awards the schools received on-the-ground professional support for growing gardens, active play areas, wildlife meadows and outdoor classrooms and reading areas. Over 3,400 Welsh children benefitted directly from improvements to their outside spaces. Supergrounds projects are pupil-led, facilitated by an LTL advisor in response to the school’s specific curricular and community needs and physical context. Participating schools have used a cross-curricular approach to the project which, as one teacher explained, "provided an excellent vehicle for developing the pupil voice and sense of responsibility and citizenship".
An evaluation of the RBS-funded project demonstrated significant benefits. Of the schools that took part:
Supported by RBS, Dream Playgrounds was a national competition for Primary Schools to win an award to build their Dream Playground. Nearly 70 Welsh schools took part in the competition, highlighting ways in which their playgrounds fell short of the learning and play needs of their pupils.
The winning school, Cwmaber Junior School in Caerphilly, received technical and financial support to develop an exciting plan for their grounds. With the support of the wider school community they have created an African hut, trim trail, story tellers chair and more. You can read more about their project here.
Supporting the education programmes of Welsh Museums, Archives and Libraries by helping them develop and use their outdoor spaces.
Schools and early years settings are not the only establishments that can use outdoor spaces for learning. With our support, 14 museums and libraries across Wales have developed creative new ways of engaging with children in their outdoor spaces. LTL Cymru provided training and advisory visits as well as follow up support to develop resource materials and outdoor activities that will enrich the educational programmes in these heritage settings. We anticipate that the learning and experiences from this project will soon be available in a good practice guide for museums and libraries across Wales.
