We support local authorities to raise standards, improve attainment and deliver outcomes for children and young people. We do this by helping to transform the spaces in which children learn and eveloping the practice of the staff using those spaces.
Our focus is on taking learning and play outdoors because research demonstrates that this can inspire and enable children to learn more effectively, enhance their health and enable them to connect with nature. Despite the proven benefits, one in ten teachers and early years practitioners claim that their school or setting is failing to make the best use of their outside space for children. Learning through Landscapes (LTL) is working to change this.
LTL has more than 20 years experience in the creation of excellent outdoor environments for learning and play. This experience has shaped government policy from the very first Building Bulletin on the Outdoor Classroom – drafted by LTL in 1990 – to recent guidance on Designing School Grounds. We also have extensive experience in workforce development and are widely commissioned by local authority education teams.

Bespoke Programmes. Our experienced programme management team develop and manage projects on behalf of local authorities. We have created a range of projects to suit widely differing budgets, combining advisory visits, conferences and remote advice and support, to meet specific needs identified by our clients.
Staff motivation and parental participation are important aspects of the way we shape our local authority programmes and our projects often result in long-term relationships with schools and early years settings, who recognise the difference learning and play outdoors has made to children’s attainment and wellbeing.
Action Research projects. LTL has a strong track record in practitioner-led enquiry and ‘action research’ and our ability to leverage additional trust funding for action research can expand the learning and development available to your team.
ENABLING WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT
Training and conferences. Our training team develop and deliver training events for teachers and practitioners on behalf of local authorities.
Additional low-cost expert advice and support for schools. We can enhance your capacity to offer advice and support on all matters relating to outdoor learning and play. The most cost effective way for schools and settings to access our expertise is by subscribing to our Membership scheme. Many local authorities take out bulk subscriptions at a reduced rate.
Continuing Professional Development. Our CPD Membership has been designed for teachers and practitioners who are passionate about delivering great outdoor learning and play experiences and who would benefit from more detailed support to develop their skills further. As well as all the benefits of our standard Membership package, CPD Members have access to our online CPD modules, providing literally hundreds of guided learning hours on a range of topics through our dedicated CPD website. We've created comprehensive modules that help develop skills and confidence in taking learning outdoors, each closely aligned with the requirements of common inspection frameworks.

Auditing your outdoor spaces. Our easy to use audit tool has been used by a range of local authorities to quickly and reliably collect data on the condition, suitability and use of external spaces.
Local authorities have also commissioned us to conduct audits to guide the allocation of limited capital funds for maximum impact. We can help marry high quality outcomes with a ‘best value’ approach and have, for example, helped several local authorities to identify where minor, practical changes could have a significant impact on outdoor play.
Supporting the tendering process. We work with procurement teams to develop robust specifications for the educational value of outside spaces, leading to higher quality design. Through workshops and ‘seeing is believing’ visits we present inspiring examples. Our consultants' specialist expertise has also been sought to produce educational landscape briefs as part of briefing documentation for bidding teams.
Consulting and engaging local communities. We can help you to ensure that the design of outside spaces reflect the needs of children and young people. Our techniques and tools ensure pupils and staff are actively engaged, and more importantly are influential, throughout the process of designing outdoor spaces. Our work in this area was nominated for a British Council for School Environments’ Innovation in School Engagement Award 2010.
