Outdoor Learning and Teacher Practice – Challenges and Opportunities
Alex Parrington, Monash University/Cornish College, Australia
In 2020 I completed a self-study of outdoor learning teacher practice. I was able to collect data on site in Terms 1 and 4 but in Terms 2 and 3, we were in lockdown for Covid-19.
This workshop will talk about what I found while teaching outdoors on-site and how this impacted the lessons I prepared for my students during home learning.
I will describe the challenges and opportunities were and discuss what I have learned by examining and reflecting on my practice in collaboration.
Who should attend?
Anyone interested in facilitating more creative outdoor learning experiences with children and young people.
Particularly Primary School Teachers, Early Year’s Practitioners, and the presentation would be of interest to Education Managers, Outdoor Learning Practitioners / Project Managers and Policy Makers.
I have 15 Years experience as a Primary classroom teacher, the last 5 of which have included extended, regular sessions teaching outdoors ‘on country’. I am a PhD student at Monash focusing on teacher practice in outdoor learning.
