About Marianne

When did you start working for LtL and what does your job involve?

I started working at Learning through Landscapes in March 2021 in a maternity cover post as the Communications and Digital Campaigns Lead.

It’s an exciting time for LtL, and my role involves promoting the many amazing projects and campaigns that my teammates are working on as far and wide as possible. It’s a pleasure to be part of.

The 3 experiences that have best equipped you for this role?

I spent a year as an English language teaching assistant in France as part of my degree, mainly working with children from disadvantaged backgrounds. Writing lesson plans and trying to engage them in learning a second language gave me a whole new level of respect for the creative thought processes that need to go into teaching. It’s something I can see embedded in all of LtL’s outdoor learning programmes, and I want to make sure that LtL’s expertise is recognised by the wider world.

I’ve worked in marketing and communications roles for a variety of organisations in the charity sector, from managing campaigns at Wales’ national arts centre to helping with social media at a national volunteering charity. I was even lucky enough to do some brief voluntary marketing work for a wildlife trust in Malawi. I think having these experiences has helped me to understand the unique challenges that the charity sector faces, and how to best tell LtL’s story.

I’ve always loved wildlife and the natural world, and I’m passionate about LtL’s ethos of finding moments of ‘awe and wonder’ in nature at all ages. I had my own ‘awe and wonder’ moment recently when I came face-to-face with a fox in my garden – it was pretty magical!

Marianne’s LtL Experience

Hiking boots

Why a pair of muddy hiking boots?

I’m not much of an outdoor adventurer, but I do love exploring the countryside in my (always muddy) hiking boots! Living in South Wales, I’m lucky to have both the Wales Coastal Path and the Brecon Beacons on my doorstep. During all the pandemic restrictions over the last year, it’s been really lovely to lose myself (sometimes literally) in walks in the Welsh countryside and to discover local gems of places I’ve never found before.
