Learning to Return Outdoors
As schools return, outdoor learning needs to be a central part of each school’s efforts to maintain restricted social bubbles and distance between pupils. As a result, many curricular lessons will have to be taken outdoors in the school grounds. This course is aimed at all teaching staff in schools, to support them as they transition into new ways of working.
This is a higher level two-day training programme available for whole-staff teams or representatives from school clusters/academy chains. It will take teachers from your school through the challenges of having pupils outdoors every day. The training and resources will equip a minimum of two teachers per school to foresee the challenges, train and resource colleagues, and support a culture to sustain the use of outdoor space for a full term.
The programme will cover:
- Overcoming barriers to using the outdoors for learning and play
- Classroom management strategies when outdoors
- How to take a different approach to teaching and learning to maximise learning outdoors
- Insight into constructing a progressive, curricular led learning programme outdoors for the autumn term
- Typical physical resources needed and how to maintain and manage those resources.
- Recording, reviewing and assessment of learning while outdoors
The training course is organised as a learning group across schools. We maximise the learning through professional dialogue and sharing.
The programme is extended through the first four weeks of term through online peer meetings and phone support from the LtL team.
The course is complemented by our Outdoor Learning Timetable for returning to school.
Our specialism for 30 years has been training and equipping educators to lead this curricular linked learning in the school grounds. Our recent ERASMUS+ work has connected us with colleagues across Europe, who we are drawing on through this planning. We can support use of any outdoor space – from greenspace to mown grass and flat tarmac – this is what we do.
Learning through Landscapes is General Teaching Council for Scotland Accredited, and Scottish College of Education endorsed for our Leadership courses for any participants in Scotland.
This product is available for whole-school staff teams, local authorities and academy chains as schools go back after Covid-19 lockdown.
We recommend a cohort of 25-30 teachers at a cost of approximately £2,900 +VAT
