Polli:Nation PhD

Andy Ruck of Stirling University is undertaking a PhD in partnership with Learning Through Landscapes (Grounds for Learning is the Scottish programme of LTL). In Andy's words:

"This PhD project is firstly, an evaluation of whether the Polli:Nation as a whole has achieved its desired educational outcomes, and secondly, a more in-depth look at the processes by which learning occurs in young people, using several case studies. I'll be looking at the ways in which a multi-faceted project like Polli:Nation can be harnessed into school curricula to meet environmental education goals.

Having visited many of the schools in the early stages of fieldwork, I plan to focus in on just a few case studies, immersing myself in the activities around Polli:Nation taking place in those schools, making observations, conducting focus group interviews and using visual data collection methods. I'll also be sending out a survey to teachers to be completed before and after the project.

That survey is just one of the things I'm working on at the moment. I've also been reading extensively to familiarise myself with existing research in this area (and there is a lot!), attending training courses and Department seminars, and fine -tuning my research design and methods to be used. It's going to be a busy but exciting 2016..."
